| | | unidentified yellow fruit and purple plant Hi, could anyone help id these, first is a yellow fruit growing on a tree next to our allotment site, i think its a yellow cherry, is it edible, i hope so because theres lots of them!
I have taken photos of the fruit and leaves.
Secondly is a plant that reminds me of a orchid (although it isnt a orchid) its growing in a area i can only describe as occasioanly marshy, its near a small river and himalyan balsam grows there (although its all been cut down) grass snakes and slow worms are found in that area to, and damselflies, i dont think that info will help in the id but maybe it describes the kind of area that the plant grows in
Thanks

Edited to say just had a quick look in my book and think that the fruit could be Cherry Plum - Prunus cerasifera

| | | Re: unidentified yellow fruit and purple plant Thanks, the marsh woundwort looks very likey, and apprently the roots and tubers are edible (i like to try wild food, i have "Raymearsitis")it would also explain the minty smell in that area (its in the mint family) and the fruit do look like those cherry plums, they do smell plum like, however i still am cautious to eat one of the fruits as nobody has said its definatley safe to eat, and im applying my rule when i pick and eat wild mushrooms, if im not 100% sure what it is, leave it! |

p.s. When fully ripe the yellow plumbs i am refering to are a dark yellow and the inside texture is not of a "juicy" kind like other plums.

| | | Re: unidentified yellow fruit and purple plant They can be good eating (some a less good) and are often planted by councils so wildherbalian's trees are likely to also be Cherry-plum |

| | | Re: unidentified yellow fruit and purple plant I had a small nibble of one of the fruits, im still alive and feeling no ill effects, so far, we'll see if im still here after 24 hours!
It tasted plum like but not quite as nice, i think the word is astringent, i dont think i would eat to many, which is a shame because theres loads of them! but i would eat one again, maybe my taste buds will become acustomed to the taste! |

I normally make crab apple jelly but this year I've noticed that the Rowan Trees are laden down so I think I'll give making rowan jelly a go as well. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
