Rushes are round,
Grasses are hollow -
Which have you found?
Sorry - just couldn't resist! |

| | | Re: Grasses/Sedges/Rushes ID's The other possibility for number five would be Juncus conglomeratus which has a more ridged stem - unfortunately the lower part of the stem in your shot is not in focus but there does seem to be a hint of ridging in it. It's also often a more matt blueish green colour rather than shiny green. Juncus effusus Juncus conglomeratus

2 Sweet Vernal Grass, Anthoxanthum odoratum
3. A sedge which I don't recognise.
4 Another sedge, possibly Glaucous Sedge, Carex flacca.
5 Compact Rush, Juncus conglomeratus (The plant does seem to have a ridged stem in the picture which rules out Smooth Rush, Juncus effusus).
6. Hard Rush, Juncus inflexus

6. Hard Rush, Juncus inflexus | Looking again agree 5 is J. conglomeratus because of the ridged stem; usually hasty looks at the board before going off to work! |
