growing on calcareous soil; on a lawn near to a flower bed. Incedentally there was some spreading yellow sorrel next to it as well...

I don't think you were far off with your Wahlenbergia species thought. I think it is probably Pratia pedunculata or a closely related species, one of many creeping plants fron Oz and NZ that were very popular in the 1970/80s (including NZ Willowherb), unfortunately, like the latter, they are often invasive in the garden but not aggressively so. Also they are not always reliably hardy. You see them much less often in nurseries nowadays.
