| | | Wild(?) Flower for ID Help Please Found this week in a local woodland, at least half a mile from any houses/gardens.
No idea at all what type of plant this is, but assume may be a garden escape seeded by birds or some similar means.
About 80cm tall overall, the flower heads were carried on long thin stems with the leaves concentrated in the lower third of the plant.
Apologies for quality of photos, but the plant was found in a very shaded area of the wood.
Any ideas on ID appreciated.
Regards
Mike. |

| | | Re: Wild(?) Flower for ID Help Please As Ollie says, Columbine, and it can be a native, found in woodland as you say. Columbine has some meaning referring to doves, and it describes the pointed, erm, pointy bits at the back of the flower, which do look like the head and neck of a dove.

| | | Re: Wild(?) Flower for ID Help Please Thanks folks,
I'd never seen this before - but sure enough, it's in Francis Rose's Wild Flower Key.
Distribution stated doesn't include North West England though, so I assume given that it was found near Clitheroe, and that there was only the one plant, it must in this instance be a garden escape.
Regards

Mike. | Its a bit of a dodgy plant really. It does occur in the wild, Whit Barrows near Grange over Sands has the true wild blue one, but these variations and escapes come up anywhere nowadays. To me it doesn't really matter though and I put it down as Columbine anyway | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
