Looks like a Jasminum sp. to me.

That was my first thought, too - but according to Alien Plants of the British Isles there's only three. Summer Jasmine (J. officinale) occurs in places around Bristol and has white flowers, Italian Jasmine (J. humile) has totally different, almost ash-like leaves and Winter Jasmine, J. nudiflorum, flowers in winter to early spring (in any case, the flowers are quite different).

That's when I gave up, and decided it was time to ask for help

If you search on the internet for Jasminum Parkeri. not sure if its the one but its similar.

I'm not sure whether it is an out-of-season Jasminum nudiflorum or if it is J. mesnyi

It's not nudiflorum, the petals are too pointed, n. has 6 rounded petals. The nearest is reevesii, if it has a strong scent.

You may be right, though J. reevesii now seems to be called J. humile 'Revolutum'.
Having now looked in a book I can see it also differs from J. nudiflorum as that has opposite leaves which this specimen doesn't.

It certainly looks like Jasminum mesnyi, the shape of the leaves especially. As you pointed out in the other thread it doesn't have the acute leaf-tips of Jasminum floridum and I really can't find anything else that looks similar
