| |  Toothwort/Broomrape Query
I was just wondering how toothworts and broomrapes are classed as plants when they have the same characteristics and lifestyle of parasiticism similar to Honey Fungus. Neither contain chlorophyll and neither photosynthesise. Is it the DNA analysis which has sorted them out?  |

They were classified as plants long before any DNA analysis had been heard of! They both have flowers, so must be plants; also they don't have mycelia as do higher fungi. Their lack of chlorophyll is a an adaptation to their specialised lifestle but evolved from more "normal" plants. |

Not hijacking the thread but we saw an incredible amount of toothwort at the base of trees in Darwins garden at Down House last month.
