ok, how did you get as far as this with the id.... what is it about what you can see that says 'sow thistle'
(i promised myself I'd get better at the daisy family next year - having rather forcused on peas this year - but I am impatient )

Um, well it just kind of looked like one...

I guess shape of flower buds, the pale colouration (not that Sow-thistles are always pale - they just are more often than other yellow composites).
