| | Carpet of Leaves ID These leaves are everywhere in my local woods. I was just wondering what they are because I see them every year but they never flower. I have never seen them in any other habitat apart from woodland and have only ever seen them beneath trees. |

I've no idea either
One of the reasons why I've sent for "The Vegetative Key to the British Flora". Maybe when that arrives, I'll be in with a chance of ID'ing things like this - but then again
Regards

| | | Re: Carpet of Leaves ID my first impression was Dock. It looks just like the Broad Leaf Dock that is coming up a treat all over my allotment at the moment. Same sort of arrangement of the emerging leaf against the one already out. Not familiar with what the first stages of growth of Bistort look like, so can't comment on that, but would agree that at least we're looking in the Polygonaceae.

Curiosity kindled, I intend to keep my eye on these, along with a few other as yet unidentified leaf growths, over the next few weeks/months, to see what eventually results.

Mike. | Hi Mike
Bistort has a spreading rhizome hence the large patches of plants in the photos, Docks tend to have tap roots or at best, rhizomes that do not spread far and hence to remain as "single" clumps. Hence it has to be Bistort. At least that is what I think.
All the best
