Deadnettle id/variation in red deadnettle

Are these two deadnettles both red deadnettle? If so I'm guessing the variation in red deadnettles is quite large?

Yes I think they're both red dead nettle, I think plants under stress tend to turn reddish.

They do vary quite a bit but often seem smallish when compared with other dead nettle species - then of course there's cut-leaved red dead nettle too which as you might expect from the name has more dissect leaves

I think the first is Henbit Deadnettle, Lamium amplexicaule. The other must be Red Deadnettle, L. purpureum.

No, they are both Red Dead-nettle.

The bracts below the flowers of Henbit Deadnettle are very distinctive - they are in pairs and look like they encircle the stalk. Sorry but the one you OKed for KeenTeen in another thread wasn't Henbit Dead-nettle either ...

You have simply *got* to get that new book that you were tipped off for then....(I'll have to go look it up if you cannot recall what I am talking about! ) It was due out in April....cost around £25.
