| | Re: Rowan Jelly I usually collect about a third to half a plastic bag full of hawthorn berries at a go - you can do this with very little risk to you if you just pick the berries or clump or berries off then de-twig in the comfort of your armchair at home. Collecting doesn't take long at all - it's the de-twigging that takes ages!
I think the version seen on tele was Ray Mears but he wasn't making jelly, he was making a puree that then solidifies to form a small stick of hawthorn that could be used over winter for vitamin C etc by Ogg the caveman.
Half a bag of berries gives me a year's supply of jam, but then, I do live alone. Sorry, I don't know the proportion of sugar to juice - I do the old fashioned saucer test - put a little on a saucer and see how solid it is within a minute. You'd certainly need more than one usual sized bag of pectin sugar though.
It's actually very sweet and delicious - I brought some into work for my colleagues and they all loved it - it's similar to a sweet redcurrant jelly in flavour. I thoroughly recommend giving it a go, it's my favourite of all the ones I make.
As this thread is really about rowan jelly, if anyone wants more advice, please send me a message and I'd be more than happy to help if I can. |

| | | Re: Rowan Jelly I made some Rowan jelly a few days ago. I used half Rowen berries and half crab apples. It does taste quite strong although I like it. I asked a few others to taste it and opinion was pretty well devided down the middle. I think I would make it one quarter Rowans and three quarter apples, then I think it would be more acceptable to most people. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
