| | | Two from Monkstown Wood The first pic, which I think is some kind of gall, was taken in Monkstown Wood in July 2007 and the second in August 2006. The bulbous part of the plant in the second pic was at least 4 inches in length. IDs anyone?
Thanks, John. |

| | | Re: Two from Monkstown Wood 1) im not so sure on galls but its not common spangle gall
2) some umbellifers sprout new leaves that start off as a big bulbous part like this one. I think this one is wild angelica. |

| | | Re: Two from Monkstown Wood I was having a look at some of my pics and found two others which show plants with bulbous features. They were both taken on the same day in July 2007 at Rathfern Wood, Newtownabbey (not too far from Rathfern Wood). Are these the same type of plant?

| | | Re: Two from Monkstown Wood yeah they all are angelica. Angelica grows it leaves from sheaths like the one in the second original photo posted. the two newer posted photos show the purple flowers and the structure of the plant which all points to Angelica. |

Looks like this might be on a wild rose leaf (maybe dog rose)?
I'm leaning towards a "Smooth Pea Gall", which are formed on rose leaves by the Diplolepis sp. gall wasps - (Possibly Diplolepis nervosa).

John | I'm now pretty confident that it is a smooth pea gall, produced by Diplolepis nervosa.
If you do a Google image search for Smooth Pea Gall, it brings up numerous images identical to yours.
