Found this in a plantation thingy where the lightmoor team are replacing trees they cut down to make way for houses. 
Sorry for poor image quality my phone focused on the background and I didn't realize till i got home  .
The catkins were just like any other birch catkin only they were a deep purple in color and they were harder to the touch unlike others which are soft.

Yes but is it a particular sub species or whatever?
Or is it just a different colour

I think its just an older catkin of common alder. Hazel catkins are usually yellow whereas alder are purple and discolour this browny colour when the flowers are spent.  |
