Would some kind botanist put me right on this thistle (ouch painful!) please? I'm confused. Not hard I hear you say!

If its as low to the ground as it looks in your photo then its a dwarf thistle..cirsium acaule they grow to 5cm They all look similar my favourite is milk thistle..l |

I agree with Wildflower's ID- without flowers they always seem invisible to me on chalk downs as I kneel down with camera/lens to look at some plant or bug + they let me know of their presence with a vengeance! |

It's very pale though, all the ones I have seen are a very deep magenta I think the ID is probably right though, esp based on the number of species around it which suggest quality grassland! My boss calls them picnic thistles |
