Sarasson's Woundwort

I have a friend in the local botanical group who calls Broad Leaved Ragwort "Sarassons Woundwort".

Is this an old name because he has been doing botany for about 50 years and he mostly only speaks in Latin. The latin name he says for that is senecio fluviatalis which is Broad leaved ragwort. Has anyone heard of it being called this?

Yes, that's the name I would call it too. Much better sounding than "Broad-leaved Ragwort"!

But he probably spells it Saracen's Woundwort

Geoffrey Grigson gives Saracen's Consound or Saracen's Comfrey as names.

ive called it broad-leaved ragwort, simply because it looks more like a ragwort

A previous latin name was Senecio sarracenicus which would at least translate into the Saracen's part of the name.

Yes, a woundwort in the sense that it was a herb used on wounds - not in the sense of being, or being related to, a Stachys.

think of Burnet Saxifrage - neither a Burnet nor a Saxifrage . . .

perhaps that's why your botanical friend "mostly only speaks in Latin"
