 I think it is a Bladder-fern, Cytopteris sp., but can anyone confirm or correct it for me please?  |

Hi Jenny I am not an expert on ferns but the spores do seem right for Bladder Fern have you a pic of the whole frond ?

Hi Jenny,
The pinnules look much too crowded for Brittle bladder fern, Cystopteris fragilis. I agree that a picture of the whole frond would help a great deal.

That's better. It looks like Brittle bladder fern, cystopteris fragilis now (unless you happened to be in a sea-cave in north east Aberdeenshire).
You should get a copy of 'The Fern Guide' by James Merryweather, costs about £7 and has an excellent descriptive key with distribution maps. Published by the Field Study Centre.

No, it wasn't in the sea cave, so its not C. dickieana.
However it was at a location where Diaphanous Bladder-fern, C. diaphana has been found........and neither the Fern Guide or any other of the books I've got mention that one!  |

Thank you for the link Tiggrx, though I'm still floundering!
Habitat is right, the Co. Cork recorder found C. diaphana here though its still on the BSBI maps for C.fragilis (his initial ID) rather than for C. diaphana but most of the veins in my photos seem to be ending at the tips rather than in the notches........
If I can re-find it in the middle of winter that'll be a good diagnostic!

And the plot thickens.......just had an email from the guy who found the Cystopteris diaphana and he says its neither Brittle Bladder-fern or Diaphanous Bladder-fern! He's going to check out where I found it and see if he can figure out which other Bladder-fern it might be... | | |
