Fasciation is caused when the cells at the growing tip of a plant are disrupted and spread-out causing a broader growing area.
Exactly what causes this is still not certain, but it's thought that it is could be be mutation caused by bacteria, virus, insects or even the weather.
I think WAB has probably added to the list of plants known to have been affected by this phenomenon.

That is interesting and confirms my suspicion.
I suspect we will never find a quantative answer but 6 amongst hundreds of "normal" ones in the same small area?? does make you ponder!!

Found today a lesser Celandine with 13 petals. It definitely stood out in the crowd.

Be jealous Garden Centres. If you could only bottle this .......

... varigated leaves of Garlic Mustard. Something to do with the nutrients in the soil, I believe.

Often caused by a 'mosaic virus'. Plant breeders sometimes deliberately introduce it to try and get this variegated effect!

I think it very likely. I await the outcome with interest, so carefull with the weedkiller.

Dorts asked me to add this to the thread:



It's an alba variant of Early-purple orchid, but with spots on the lip and spotted leaves. There were several of these growing with 100+ normal plants.
