| | | Re: ST !John's Wort Kev, Jim or is it Johnboy............I usually take a few shots of any plant to id, one of the whole thing, one of the flowers and one of the stems, or even better is to make some notes as well, though I am bad at that.
Do you find most of your plants up on the downs ? |

| | | Re: ST !John's Wort Hi Jonny.
I do spend most of my time on the South Downs. It's such a large area with so mutch variety, I don't need to go elsewhere at the moment. When I take the wife out we normally go inland to places of specific interest which makes a nice change for me. Oh, I always fail to make notes

| | | Re: ST !John's Wort There's absolutely loads of this about at present Kev, sick of seeing the stuff to be honest The good thing is though, I think it's worth a revisit because I hope you don't mind me saying, I used to seeing much better quality shots from you I'm sure you can take a comment like that on the chin though

| | | Re: ST !John's Wort Speaking from a good few year's-worth of photography experience, it's always best to take flower shots (or indeed insect shots) when it's overcast, I'm sure you know that anyway. It's just that the tones become muted and you have far less chance of catching harsh shadows that can most often ruin a great photo. Also, on a sunny day, if and when you can, stand so that you cast a shadow all over the plant, it obviously isn't as effective as an overcast day, but it definitely does help to maintain some of the midtones that you would normally lose if in direct sunshine. I really do hope this post doesn't sound condescending because that's not my intention

Ian G | No prob's Ian
I am surprised that it came out as good as it did. I took 3 shots and that was the best. I found it in the woods in deep shade with a tiny amount of sun shining down on it. It was also waving around in the breeze. I took the shot from horseback whilst being chased by the Sheriffs men blah blah blah.
Anyway I doubt if I will be able to find that plant again. The next one I find I will inspect it a little more closely and hopefully it will be in a favourable position
