| | | Re: Zirben Hi tcvarlh,
Pinus cembra, aka Swiss Stone Pine....a quick Google by me says it probably does live here in the UK. I see you used to live in middle Europe, where this tree is native I presume? Is there any particular reason why you are wanting to know if it grows here? (I am simply being nosey, by the way! )
Oh, and welcome to WAB.

| | | Re: Zirben Hello Dutchess,
there is a very important reason. Take 8 cones, cut into halves, place in large glass sealable jar, add some sugar, pour in enough vodka to drown it all, seal and leave somewhere for 6 weeks Inever managed all 6, my Zirbengeist got tested at 5) An alternative to sloe gin and far healthier. Apart from the alcohol. I need to find Enzian, Wacholder (Juniper (fresh)) and Guendel (?) too. Same recipes. Christmas is a-comin'
Prosit
thanks for the link

Thanks for the recipe, I am sure my ol' mate BWD (and some others I could mention!) will be interested in that too!

| | | Re: Zirben Moi? Me is not ladylike when it comes to drinkies and me likes pineapple!
Talking continental, I must say loved the green Vervain stuff from Le Puy. We visited the brewery in August but at this time of night I cannot even remember it's proper name . But I'll be sure to get some more next time we go over to France
Bon nuit, mon ami!

| | | Re: Zirben Do you mean Verveine? I agree. Delicious, but like most good things to be taken carefully, I had a very weird dream after a bottle of the stuff (ok it was a whole bottle but in those days Iwas bulletproof). I won't relate the dream, promise.
Dutchess, here’s my all time favourite -Nuss schnapps-
Take 12 green walnuts (I get mine from the local undertaker’s walnut tree, we have an agreement, I collect all the walnuts when ripe and he’s promised not to bury me) Chop in half (careful, they are sneaky and will slip in the hand) A small sprig of Artemisia, the same of Fenugreek, some sugar, lots of Vodka. The sealable jar and 3 months time. Mix all in jar, seal, place in the light, wait, drink…Great after a meal, before a meal, with a meal, anytime.

| | | Re: Zirben Yes, it does grow in Britain and it grows very well - I believe it's used for forestry in parts of central Wales. The common name I have listed for it is Arolla Pine and you'll certainly find a specimen or two in any decent arboretum.
Apparently, though, it doesn't produce viable seed or naturalise particularly well under our conditions - I've never seen one that's been anything other than obviously planted and the BSBI database only records one location in North-Central England. |

Hmm, and luckily, green walnuts are readily available at this moment in time. Thank you for the recipe! Methinks you'll fit in here very well
