this willowherb had a very dark coloured flower. any idea what it is?

Can't quite see from the pic, but I assume you have discounted Hoary?

The pic looks to me like it could be either Short Fruited or Broad Leaved.

I've seen a considerable variation in colour of Broad Leaved recently, from very pale indeed (almost white) to deep pink. The darker coloured ones being on somewhat stunted plants growing in quite shady spots.

possibly short-fruited but colour variation in willowherbs is very variable and its hard to tell from the photo
