| | | Identify this wild flower for me please I found this flower while on a walk in the cotswolds near Turkdean on 09/08/05. It was just inside a mixed wood. The surrounding area was hilly sheep pasture, about 170 M above sea level. It was approx. 16" tall and the leaves were large and glossy (at the base only). Looks like a lilly, but I can't find it in books or on wild flower websites. Image attached. |

| | | petes123 Is it possible to enlarge it selectively? particularly the flowers. Could possibly be a Heliborine but cannot see enough detail with this image.

| | | Does look like a Helleborine, but the flower colour is wrong for Broad-leaved, and it is a very robust specimen. Possibly some sort of hybrid or even a garden throw-out. Close-ups of flowers would be a great help.

Helliborine lancefolia looks to fit. " compact, to 60*45cms narrowish dark green glossy leaves to 12cms long;deep lilac flowers, late summer" Taken from the Complete Handbook of Garden Flowers.

| | | Don't really think the leaves fit the description 'narrowish'.
Petes123, may I send a copy of your picture to an expert?

| | | petes123,
The man from Kew says it's a 'rather fine specimen' of Broad-leaved Helleborine (Epipactis
helleborine).
I've not seen one so well coloured, but they are variable.

| | | What great work there from members. As I mentioned before I post quite alot of pics and do not identify them. I guess the administrator does this in many cases and it is really appreciated. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
