| | | Rush / Sedge from next to Pond.ID Needed
I found this rush/sedge next to my local pond. Is it woodrush? |

| | | Re: Rush / Sedge from next to Pond.ID Needed My first thought would be Sharp-flowered Rush (Juncus acutiflorus) but it is very much a tentative ID I can't quite make out enough details to be anywhere near certain. I'm also struggling a little with the scale on this one and a few clues about size and habitat (ie acid soils or more neutral?) would be helpful.

| | | Re: Rush / Sedge from next to Pond.ID Needed it is either sharp-flowered or jointed rush but I would lean in favour of the former (oooh don't I sound posh )

The Sharp-flowered is difficult to separate from the Jointed Rush. It has similar leaves, but the tepals are never as dark as in Jointed Rush, where they are almost blackish-brown, and the main branches are often almost horizontal (i.e. at right-angles to the stem)
| Still confused.

| | | Re: Rush / Sedge from next to Pond.ID Needed Here are two quite different rushes which I picked on Tuesday in Glen Quoich, to work on their IDs.
On the left is a paler flower with less angular joints, which I think is Jointed Rush judging by Collins Guide. On the right is a dark brown flowered and very angular specimen which looks like Sharp-flowered Rush.
They were both growing in a rough meadow drainage ditch beside pine forest, probably fairly acid soil l large quantities of each so I felt ok to take specimens.
The original specimen for this thread looks like Jointed Rush to me.
Sorry my photos are poor - not much light in Scotland these days !
