| | | wild carrot The attached image is in the Wildflower Gallery as Wild Carrot. I am not sure about this and think it looks more like Moon Carrot - Seseli libanotis. My reasons are that the umbel is more convex than wild carrot, also there looks to be evidence of a slightly different leaf formation. I know that the dark floret can often be missing in Wild Carrot - Daucus carota but in this photo there is no ruff. The thing that is bothering me is that the contributor states it was taken in Cornwall and the books give chalk turf for the habitat. Anyone with ideas as to which it might be, please. wildone |

| | Hi Wildone,
I've had a look through a few different books but I can only find Wild Carrot and the pictures look very similar.
Just in case you're reading this and wondering why Wildone is keen on getting the details right - she is actually one of our group of picture editors, who are currently doing an outstanding job of naming hundreds of unidentified photos in the Gallery. This is invaluable because search engines obviously can't see what is in an image and they rely entirely on the accuracy of the names, keywords and descriptions of photos to send the searchers to the right page on the Internet.
The more easily people can find the right result when looking through search engines, the more confident they become in using the resulting website, and this has already shown significant results in the past couple of months.
So if you notice any pictures in the Gallery that don't seem to match their description or you know the name of an unidentified photo, please add the details to the comments box underneath the image and we'll update it as soon as possible.
Thanks
Stuart

| | | Hard to tell from the photograph as seen on the screen, but if it's Moon Carrot it's way out of its recorded distribution if this is in Cornwall. Moon Carrot has a very restricted distribution.
Possibly it's Sea Carrot (Daucus carota subspecies gummifer)

| | For distribution map of Moon Carrot, see the NBN Gateway ( www.searchnbn.net)
Not that plants can't be found in new places, but Moon Carrot in Cornwall seems pretty unlikely, looking at the map.

| | | Thank you all for your help and useful suggestions. Looking at it again in daylight and enlarging it to 200% I have come to the conclusion that it is Wild Carrot - Daaucus carota. I have decided that I need to look even more closely at my local Wild Carrots as I live in the right area for Moon Carrot.
Thanking you once again.

| | | Mainly a plant of chalk grassland, says the book, but in Cambridgeshire is also found on chalky roadside banks and on ledges in an abandoned chalk quarry. All populations lie within SSSIs, so if you find some not in an SSSI it'll be very exciting.

| | | Thanks Henrya I'll keep my eyes open. It would be wonderful to find something not in a designated area. |

| | Wildone (and other Cambridgeshire denizens and visitors),
Do you know the Cambridgeshire Flora website http://mnlg.com/gc ?
Tells you all about Moon Carrot in the county (and heaps more).
