Mystery wild rose head

Can anyone please help me understand what this is.



The wild rose plant had many rose hips at the tips but on a couple, this was seen. What is it?

I think it's a gall, Robin's Pin-Cushion caused by a gall wasp (Diplolepis rosae).

Thanks Claire. you are quite right, it is a Robin's pin cushion. Learnt some interesting facts from researching on the web. Thank you for the ID which was the hardest part.

This illustrates why I enjoy photography so much. You find things, record them and carry out research later. There is so much mystery about and its great fun to unravel it.
