did you get a photo of the bottom leaves. its hard to tell if this is a dead orchid or a dead grass  |

it did however have seeds inside the pods which I have planted in my wildflower meadow so hopefully next year I'll find out what it was...

Not an orchid I am afraid, that pod has opened from the top. Orchids split down the sides. How big were the seeds, orchids are dust like.

the seeds were white, about 1mm in diameter and almost spherical but irregular

I only suggest it from your description of the seeds, fits Bladder Campion perfectly. Thinking about it, I think Silene pods have a small aperture at the top rather than a split, I'll have to check (or wait until they germinate next year )
