Re: Flower of the day

Today - Red Bartsia - recently ID'd by me and looks rather insignificant, but close-up or under a lens, the flowers are lovely. I have recently been photgraphing its much larger cousin Alpine Bartsia, which is blue.

Went to see a New Forest speciality today, the rare Small Fleabane.

Also a bit of Least Water-pepper about, Pennyroyal & loads of Chamomile.

Re: Flower of the day

My Flower of the day is Field Gentians on the New Forest

I found a load while I was walking to a bog to look for the rare Marsh Clubmoss.

Re: Flower of the day

Well at the risk of upsetting Jez and not going for his field scabious I'm going for ragwort as it brings back warm memories of looking at loads of cinnabar moth caterpillars on them with some friends a few years back. Also, taking a little liberty here, I'm going for rowan as they look really lovely at the moment with their clusters of red berries - very cheery in this wet, grey weather!

youre very lucky finding the bog orchids cos I once traipsed around in a bog for 2 hours looking for bog orchid! they are impossible to find unless you have seen them before and know what your looking for!

Re: Flower of the day

or you get a friend to take you to see them They are even smaller than you think. I was lucky enough to be shown exactly where they grow just over a week ago. Took 100 photos while slowly sinking into the bog and was very close to ending up in it! They grow in the wettest part of the bog so take your wellies with you!

Re: Flower of the day

Flower of the week for me has to be the violet helleborine I found in profusion on Wednesday night in the wind, rain and gloom of a Chiltern beech wood.

Re: Flower of the day

Went for a walk up the Forest after fish & chips this evening & highlights were thousands of Autumn Lady's Tresses,

hundreds of Field Gentians,

& a Dwarf Thistle.
