Regards, Audrey. | When I saw Gorse mentioned here I thought 'What, that's always in flower where ever you go' - but then I realised Aviemore is way up in Scotland above Edinburgh, so I guess with the rocky soil and colder climate you must have up there, a splash of colour from Gorse must really brighten up ones day.
Guess we're quite lucky down here on the heaths of the Suffolk Coast for we have Ulex europaeus, U.gallii, U.minor and even hybrids between U.europaeus and gallii. U.minor is an introduction, but further inland at the Brecks, it is thought to be native.
That's one of the joys of having an Xmas stroll on coastal heaths and seeing the gorse in flower, for as one species dies off, another will come into flower - with presumably, plenty of overlap.

Neil. | Gorse flowers up here in most months, but not so much in December and January, however as it's one of the few things to be found flowering at this time of year, it is a welcome sight. There is definitely much more flowering this winter than in previous years, I think due to the mild autumn and mild winter so far. It has been so mild in the last few days, we haven't had the wood-burning stove lit since Saturday, which is unusual at this time of year.
As we get into early spring, before much is flowering locally, we tend to head to the coast as there are usually flowers to be found, even on coasts quite a bit further north. Chanonry Point is a favourite spot, it's nice to be able to combine Botanising and Dolphin watching.
Regards, Audrey. |

| | Re: Flower of the day Quite a few flowers still in flower on unploughed fields in South Devon -
Field mustard - lots of plants.
Scarlet pimpernel.
Prickly sowthistle.
Wild radish.
Germander speedwell.
Sun spurge.
I've also seen Red Admirals and a blackbird singing for a mate!
The reason is that we haven't yet had a single frost this winter and it has been very mild. Quite remarkable. |

Quite remarkable. | After tramping around the fields this morning, I can add groundsel and wild rocket to the flowering list, but the sun spurges seem to have gone to seed. It's hard to tell with those! Mild again here. 10C with a max of 11.2C, just after midnight, in nearby Teignmouth. |

The old adage is:
'Kissing's in season while Gorse is in flower.'
Happy New Year to all, Ron.
