Yesterday - several Lesser Twayblade (some even flowering!) under the heather on moorland around Lake Vyrnwy plus Ivy-leaved Bellflower (a first for me) in a flush. Brightened up a rainy day on the hills.

It did - but I was more pleased with the Bellflower. I've seen the twayblade before whilst surveying bogs on Lewis.

i'd rather see the twayblade, simply because it's an orchid I haven't seen yet that's very difficult to find, but then again that also applies (minus the word 'orchid') to the bellflower.

Well you could do worse than try the moors around the western end of Lake Vyrnwy. Its not too far from the midlands. You have to look under a lot of heather, but I've been doing 1 sq m quadrats on random transects and have seen it probably a dozen times now in a total of maybe 130 quadrats. So a strike rate of nearly 10% - usually just the leaves though.

Hi Johnny,

I know Lake Vyrnwy quite well since I live fairly nearby in Wolverhampton (and my mom and her partner like the hotel!). I went there last year in search of Lesser Twayblade and found nothing, hence I had to drag mom all the way up to Roman Steps at Harlech (where we did find 3 but it was a monumental walk and search).

I'd be extremely interested in knowing where exactly you located them! Could I ask you to pm me some directions? I understand if you do not feel comfortable disclosing site details.

Will do - bear with me, the survey sheets, maps and grid refs are in our first class accomodation ( a caravan near Bala). I'm back at home now so I'll try to retrieve some details for you next week.
