Flower IDs Please

Taken on Portchester Common. A chalk hillside overlooking Portsmouth Harbour.

Thanks

Re: Flower IDs Please

It looks like a Fyfield pea and the other one a Devilsbit scabious or a Small scabious. I'm not brilliant at flower id, but someone who is should come along shortly.

Thanks for your reply. Certainly the blossom on the first image is similar to a pea plant. There are a large number of the two types of flower depicted amongst the grass and thistles on the hillside. Its a very beautiful place, especially at this time of the year.

Re: Flower IDs Please

I'd say no.2 is Small Scabious Scabiosa columbaria.

Re: Flower IDs Please

1 Can't see leaves, but possibly Broad-leaved Everlasting Pea, Lathyrus latifolius
2 Small Scabious, Scabiosa columbaria.

Re: Flower IDs Please

Thank you all. I think we have agreed the ID of No2. I shall return to the site and get more of No1, including the leaves, and post it to this thread later today.

Cheers

Re: Flower IDs Please

Hi

I am sure Aeshna5 is correct with Everlasting Pea, it is quite common in places on both the North and South Downs. The lack of subtlety in colour is characteristic!

All the best

No, I don't think it's Restharrow, though that would certainly be possible in that habitat. I think the petals are too dark and the wrong shape for Restharrow, and you don't get so many flowerheads together in a spike like that with Restharrow. But I'm certainly no expert!

Re: Flower IDs Please

I agree with aeshna5 also. Restharrow's lower petal comes up to a point rather like a hook and it's colour is far more subtle as mentioned!
