instinct saying common bent but...

calcareous soil and damp(ish) habitat

How tall was it?

Looks a bit like Wood Small-reed (Calamagrostis epigejos) which would be rather taller than a Bent

i have just been thinking it couldve been a reed. it was quite tall, mustve been about a metre tall...

It does look like it isn't quite delicate enough for a bent and wood small-reed does look a bit like a very robust bent species. Without the actual specimen or close pics of ligules and spikelets I wouldn't like to say 100%
