| | | Perforate St John's-wort These are images of St John's-wort.
(1) clearly shows leaves with translucent spots and black dots on leaf edges. So this will be Perforate I assume.
(2) & (3) are of a second plant which I assume is also St John's-wort but it has red stem and flowers appear different, although that may be because they are not fully open. Is this also Perforate?

| | | Re: Perforate St John's-wort Hi
For 2) and 3) it looks like the stem is 4-winged, hence Square-stemmed St John's Wort Hypericum tetrapterum
All the best

| | | Re: Perforate St John's-wort The second plant is Perforate St. John's Wort as I can see one of the ridges that are on opposite sides of the stem in this species in pic 3.

| | | Re: Perforate St John's-wort Thanks for replies. I didn't realise it at the time of taking the picture but the
the first shot, I think, provides a good illustration of perforation and leaf edge spotting. I thought 2 & 3 might be a different plant because of the stem colour.
I've given similar advice before but for novices like me it's always best to take a few images of a plant that might be a puzzle because it can be surprizing what detail can show up when studying the images at home and using zoom facility. |

| | | Re: Perforate St John's-wort What sort of ground was the second plant growing in?
Square-stemmed St.Johns-wort is often reddish coloured but prefers heavier, damper ground than Perforate does....... |

| | | Re: Perforate St John's-wort Both plants were in the same locality. The images were taken only minutes apart. They were both very close to a track on a former railway which is now made up of compressed grit. I'm no expert on soil types but would say it was dry, fairly light and not rich. |
