Number 2 is common centaury

Hi

1 A bedstraw although I am not sure which one!!

2 As agp says almost certainly Common Centaury (Centaurium sp)

3 Mignonette (Reseda lutea)

4 Figwort (Scrophularia sp) with what looks like a Mullein Moth caterpillar

4. I agree with figwort, might the moth be Water Betony Shargacucullia scrophulariae

djackso, interesting thought on the caterpillar, I had just assumed it was a Mullein moth. Any idea on differentiating the two? From my limited understanding is pretty rare in the UK, but these photos were taken in the Channel Islands, so more possible. Mullein does lay on figwort too though, as far as i know.

Sorry - it was just a gut feeling based on google images. Try posting in the insect forum though - I'm sure someone there will know the difference

Might 1. have been growing in marshy ground, it looks like marsh bedstraw, Galium palustre?

It was in a shaded area alongside the footpatch on the coast path - about 100 yards back from the clifftop. Largely bracken and grasses, not particularly marshy.
