Did you look at the leaves to see whether or not there were translucent dots on them?
(If you hold a leaf up to the light and see light coming through very small dots it indicates Perforate St. Johnswort.)

errm no but i'll do that next time - thanks for the tip it'll make id'ing much easier between the two
