What will this be? I was thinking leek/garlic/chives...

None of those. Surely an Allium sp but without more information/detail, I wouldn't like to say. This is one of the onions which produce bulbils on their flowerheads and there was a thread a while back about this. I'll look into it unless someone else comes up with a decision beforehand!

thanks. it didnt have any leaves as far as i could see but i didnt go right down to the base. it was about 50cm tall

What about Allium scorodoprasum (Sand Leek), we have this here and it looks very like this.

I agree. Looks like the variety compactum which does not produce flowers.
