My first Orchid ...

Hello all ... today I photographed my first orchid!

I'm sure it must be a pretty common one - from my book I would say Early Purple Orchid - would any of you experts like to confirm that?

Or tell me what it really is?

If it is, it should have had spotted leaves!

Nice photo Jez, I'm no expert but looking at my book I would say Early Purple also.

Yo jezlee that's a nice photo you've got yourself for your first orchid photo.Well done.Was this photo taken recently? Coz all the Early Purple orchids i've found in the last few weeks have been all on there way out & look nothing like your lush flowers.

I had a text today, or was it yesterday now, from the wardens ? someone counted 7341 common spotted orchids and 2 southern marsh orchids at southwater country park. Who is this commited ?..................Jon

Thanks, John! And yes, I took the photo yesterday at a Country Park near me in Shropshire, and there was a grassy, slightly marshy, clearing in the woods, in full sunshine, and these orchids were dotted about all over the place! Some of the flowers were dying, but a lot were in full bloom.

Looks like Southern Marsh-orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa). Early-purple Orchids should have finished flowering by now and have shorter bracts between the flowers.
