| | | Mountain Pansies Was out photographing plants around Malham Tarn yesterday and thought I'd try and show the range of colour variations we get in the Mountain Pansy ( Viola lutea). In descending order of commonness they include:
I think the third one with the blue/purple upper petals the most striking. We don't get Field Pansy ( Viola tricolor) anywhere around here so I'm sure these aren't hybrids but just represent the natural colour variation within the species.

| | | Re: Mountain Pansies Lovely flowers - I haven't come across Mountain Pansy yet, but lots of Field Pansy (V.arvensis) and Sand Pansy (V.tricolor ssp.curtsii). Pansies have got to be one of my favourites! |

| | | Re: Mountain Pansies Thanks for posting the photos I love pansies and think the wild ones are very under-rated and over-looked.

| | | Re: Mountain Pansies Agreed, this year i have discovered the beauty of the viola's in large part thanks to someone i know who works with some of the rarer ones. I havnt had the pleasure of finding a proper wild mountain pansy yet but im working on that one. Excellent series of pics and thanks for sharing them with us. |

| | | Re: Mountain Pansies they're lovely, I met them up in Scotland for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and they seemed far prettier than their big blousy relatives from the garden centre! |
