| | | Water Avens - possible hybrid but with what? Found this recently at Malham Tarn NNR - I'm pretty sure it's either a hybrid between Water Avens ( Geum rivale) and something else - not sure what, or it could just be a very odd double flowered 'sport' of Water Avens.
Growing nearby are Meadowsweet, Marsh Cinquefoil, Wood Avens in an area of fen/carr woodland.
It's quite remote from any sources of domesticated varieties but I guess I can't rule them out entirely.
If anybody has any ideas of what precisely it is I would be grateful.
Whatever it is it certainly makes for a lovely flower.

| | | Re: Water Avens - possible hybrid but with what? Thanks Hobjob - it certainly looks very similar (but not quite as deep a red) as images of this variety on the web. Because of where it is I wonder if this is in fact an odd natural mutation (rather than a hybrid) and the sort of thing breeders would have looked for when developing their varieties.

Since posting this I've spoken to a number of botanists about this plant and there does seem to be a consensus developing that it is just an odd mutation. If so it does seem to be a fairly common one in populations of Water Avens up here. Perhaps something to keep an eye open for elsewhere.
Thanks to everyone for their interest in this.
