| | | Oak Apple Day 29th May I hope everyone's wearing a sprig of oak today as it's Oak Apple Day or Royal Oak Day, does anyone remember it from their school days or are most of you too young, when I went to school if you wern't wearing a sprig of Oak preferably with an oak apple or raw acorn on it you could get stung with a nettle or other such nasty things, At one time it was even a holiday but that was discontinued

| | | Re: Oak Apple Day 29th May Oak Apple Day was a holiday celebrated in England on 29 May to commemorate the restoration of the monarchy in Great Britain and Ireland, in May 1660. In some parts of the country, the day was also known as Shick-Shack Day or Arbour Day.
In 1660, Parliament declared 29th May a public holiday:
"Parliament had ordered the 29 of May, the King's (Charles II) birthday, to be for ever kept as a day of thanksgiving for our redemption from tyranny and the King's return to his Government, he entering London that day."
Cheers,
Adam

Adam | thanks Adam I thought it was something to do with that but not all the details, but I did understand that in 1651 when Charles was being pursued by Oliver Cromwells men he hid in an Oak tree which saved his life which is why Oak is so significant, the actual tree is supposed to still be alive today and is still called the Royal Oak

| | | Re: Oak Apple Day 29th May I had never heard of this.
Here's a link for more details British Culture - British Customs and Traditions in May - Oak Apple Day
I wonder is this why we still have a late May bank holiday? And not that I need an excuse but a quote from the link "It is also traditional to drink beer and eat plum pudding......" So it's off to the pub tonight
Thanks for the thread, its always good to learn something new.
