Sedges

I've been having a bad-sedge day and help would be very appreciated!

1. Pill sedge, Carex pilulifera?


2. Spike-rush, but very unsure which....


3. Sedge A


4. Sedge B


5. Sedge C


6. and Sedge D - I wondered if this was also Pill Sedge, but the bract was different....

Sedges are often quite difficult to identify and many would be almost impossible from photographs. You generally need a handlens and mature fruits.

The ones that you suggest may be Carex pilulifera do look possible. It generally grows in very dense tufts on heathland or woodland on acidic soils.

I think your spike-rush is actually Deer-grass (Trichophorum cespitosum)

Thanks for the Deergrass correction - I had a feeling the sedges might have to wait until they developed fruit! Never was much good at being patient.....
