Cowslips or Oxlips?

I was driving along the M40 yesterday - Banbury/Warwick area when I saw lots of what I thought were cowslips on the motorway verges. I could not look too closely because I was driving but there were lots of patches of them. I assumed they had been planted. I don't imagine they got there naturally. Very pretty, anyway.

Do any M40 regulars know if that is what they were?

Cowslips (and primroses) are often planted on raodside grass verges these days. They try to use wild stock too.
