| | | 2 Flowers to confirm ID Could the ID of these be confirmed please?
The first I think is Barren Strawberry and the second Common Chickweed (with Cleaver intruding). |

| | | Re: 2 Flowers to confirm ID Hi rscott, I don't think the strawberry is Barren Strawberry - the petals seem too close together. With Barren Strawberry you can usually see the sepals showing in the gaps between the petals.
Chickweed and Cleavers are right. |

| | | Re: 2 Flowers to confirm ID The first is a species of Strawberry (Fragaria).
It doesn't quite look like a Wild Strawberry - was it near a garden? |

| | | Re: 2 Flowers to confirm ID Thanks for responses. The picture was taken last Sunday next to a walkway (former railway) I would say at least half a mile from any dwelling. Its in an area where I have found and eaten wild strawberries in the past but I assumed it would be to early for that to flower. The plant was on the raised shoulder of the walkway which is dry. south facing and not what I would describe as good soil. If it remains a puzzle I would happily return to get more images. In that case any advice on what I might look for would be appreciated. |

| | | Re: 2 Flowers to confirm ID Another character that can help split Wild and Barren Strawberry is the length of the terminal tooth on the leaves. In Wild Strawberry it's longer than the ones on either side of it and in Barren Strawberry it's shorter than the ones on either side. The sepals on Wild Strawberry are generally shorter than the petals whilst in Barren Strawberry they are almost the same length and can be seen between the petals.
Having said all of that I'm still not sure which one it is. I don't think the flower is full expanded yet and old leaves can sometimes look different so I think I'd go back and have another look bearing in mind some of the ideas above.
