| | | Anyone seen any spring gentian yet? I'm going up to Yorkshire at the end of May and am wondering if there are any hotspots for spring gentian around? |

It grows in Teesdale (try alongside the Cow Green reservoir) otherwise you'll have to travel to the Burren in Ireland.
It flowered in April last year 2007 and you would see Primula farinosa (Bird's-eye Primrose) and Viola rupestris (Teesdale Violet) amongst other things. |

| | | Re: Anyone seen any spring gentian yet? Drive to the parking area by Cow Green Reservoir and follow the track down to Cauldron Snout (fantastic waterfall that is well worth a visit too). Part way along the track, you should see enclosures to protect the rarest of the Teesdale flora. In these I saw spring gentian on the end of May Bank Holiday Monday a couple of years ago. Only two were in flower and I was told they had flowered quite early that year. Spring here in Lancashire has been rather late this year, so perhaps there might be more out at the end of May this time.
Also, look out for the unusual fern, moonwort and black grouse around Langdon Beck. Upper Teesdale is a magnificent area for wilderness and wildlife.
Also, I am told mountain avens grows on nearby Cronkley Fell, but after a long walk I failed to find it (though I have seen it in the Dales).
Regards, Chris

| | | Re: Anyone seen any spring gentian yet? If you go to the very top of Cronkley Fell in June you find it is capped with Sugar Limestone. On here grows Helianthemum oelandicum ssp laevigatum (Hoary Rock-rose) at its only British site. |

As this thread is just over 3 years old, it's nice to know they are still around!
