Whitebeam bambuzzled

I planted a whitebeam last year which developed orange spots on thhe thin trunk from a planter size pot.

It is basically just a trunk about a metre out of the ground with no branches what so ever. As I say, I planted it last year in the hope it would tke for this year but as yet no joy. I wonder now if the orange spots it had was a disease and it is now dead. When I bend the trunk it will not snap as if it were dead but I really like these trees when they are established and I like to think I could give iit a chance before lobbo!

Any ideas??

Make a small scratch on the trunk to see if it is green underneath. If its brown it is dead Good luck

Well thats what I thought but having googled it, it says that it is brown anyway. This is why its a good wood for carving apparantly.

But if brown means dead, then its dead!

Sounds like it could have the fungus Coral Spot which is often seen on dead or dying wood. Not sounding good for your sapling!

Yes it is coral spot. Ive googled it and that is exactly what was found.
