Canker, How Serious Is It?

I'm reading more and more reports about canker and how it will spell the end of the Horse Chestnut. How serious is the threat? or is this just a good story?

It certainly seems a threat to individual trees as many have succumbed to it; but maybe some trees will have an immunity to it?

Canker affects the tissues of the trees and spread some will suffer minor consequence and others it can be more lethal and the tree has to be destroyed to stop others becoming infected they say it can be treated if caught early by chemicals and fungacide treatments
