| | | Unidentified ferns - help please! I decided it was time to get brave and start identifying the ferns that were stacking up waiting......
With the help of Roger Phillips' 'Grasses, Ferns, Mosses, Lichens' I've managed quite a few, but the following have got me stumped!
Fern 1: Quite small, growing in a rock crack beside a forestry road.
Fern 2: Again smallish, in oak, ash and hazel woodland
Fern 3: Maybe 60-80cm tall - the spores don't seem to match any of the illustrations in Phillips....
Help and comments much appreciated!
(Ooops I've goofed - going to have to re-post as they're all enlarging to the first one!)
Hope I've got them right now......

I reckon they're all Buckler ferns. No.3 I'd say is Broad Buckler fern, the other two are a bit young for me to say. |

| | | Re: Unidentified ferns - help please! Agree that 3 looks like Broad Buckler (Drypoteris dilatata) and that the others are a but young.
The first looks it grow up to be a male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) and the other one might turn out to be Black Spleenwort (Asplenium adiantum-nigrum)but when they are young they can look very different from the mature fronds. |

| | | Re: Unidentified ferns - help please! Thanks to you both for the help - I should have realised the third was Broad Buckler Fern - it was obvious once I'd been told! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
