| | | Spring Flowers Every year The Wild Flower Society organises various competitions. One is to see how many flowering plants you can find in the first week in March.
It's good fun to get out to your usual haunts and see how things are doing. I've been round the local Cheshire weed patches, verges, fields and made one special visit to The Great Orme (above Llandudno) in North Wales so far.
It's surprising what you find in flower so early. How about these for instance: Viola riviniana (Common Dog-violet)! Plenty of Viola odorata (Sweet Violet) of course but this one is ridiculously early and no it wasn't either Viola hirta (Hairy Violet) or Viola reichenbachiana (Early Dog-violet). Violets aren't easy but you can tell the difference from the sepals and the sepal appendages. Geum Urbanum (Wood Avens) in full flower, Centranthus ruber (Red Valerian) only a couple of florets but still out. Luzula campestris (Good Friday grass) is usually out on Good Friday as the name suggests but this patch was very early. Erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican Fleabane) This is a summer flower but in this sheltered spot usually flowers throughout the winter.
Altogether 69 flowering plants so far - a good year in spite of the frosts and I haven't finished yet! |
