Chestnut buds are sticky. But why?
Protection against bugs or viruses? Is there any research / proof?
And what is the sticky stuff?

As far as I know the sticky buds prevent the bud from damage from insects and frost, but I don't know what it's made from.

You may find more by following the terms "bud exudate", "bud resin" and "bud scale".

It is the propolis that makes them sticky, bees use it for desinfecting there hyve.
