Chestnut buds are sticky. But why?

Protection against bugs or viruses? Is there any research / proof?

And what is the sticky stuff?

As far as I know the sticky buds prevent the bud from damage from insects and frost, but I don't know what it's made from.

It is the propolis that makes them sticky, bees use it for desinfecting there hyve.

I have learnt something new today! See there it is again the wonders of nature always providing simple solutions like in this case desinfecting Hives.
