I have just been looking at some photos I took of Common Figwort in August this year and the stem is going purple but it was not winged.

Was the stem winged? Green Figwort - S.umbrosa has quite broad wings.
Excellent pictures of the Water Figwort - S. auriculata, showing the winged stems.

Your plant is Common Figwort (Scrophularia nodosa) - it frequently has a purplish coloration. |
