| | | rowan damage hi there any help appreciated. i was recently working near the west highland way and i noticed that nearly all the rowans had this sort of damage , the branches were broken ,but not all the way through . also as you can see an adjacent birch was undamaged. i think there is cattle in this part could it be them? .

| | | Re: rowan damage I can't say for sure. What i can say is i bought a young Rowan this year and the sheep have devastated it. Hope you can get more of an absolute answer to your question.

| | | Re: rowan damage Hi seamusagleann, that looks like it could be wind damage - and you'd see hoof marks in the ground if it was cattle. |

| | | Re: rowan damage I wouldnt say the damage is extensive but it is odd...i guess wind damage as others have said....either that or ...just maybe...with the weight of either lots of birds or some bigger sized birds feeding on the bounty of berries a little while back?...just an idea. But i suspect wind or damage from grazing animals...

| | | Re: rowan damage Hi,
Looking at the photo the damage seems a long way up, [might be the perspective], deer perhaps.

| | | Re: rowan damage thanks all for the input ,my theory was bird damage too .that would be why only the rowan sufferred ,however the case has been " discussed" by me and other rangers and we still can't come to an agreed conclusion . now it has been handed over to the forestry commission's plant health department . as soon as a report comes my way i will let every one know ...thanks again!

| | | Re: rowan damage You've some lovely pictures there seamusagleann.
The Rowan looks to be in good health from the picture and the broken branches about three/four years old. The way the heel has torn suggests physical damage, perhaps wind but possibly weight of snow or build up of ice. This might have affected the birches around the Rowans but you say not.
Have you got capers in the area? One of those jaspers clambering about trying to reach rowan berries could do some damage. |
