Mainly, who needs 'pest .... resistant' trees. Most of the things that interest naturalists are "pests" or pest-dependent? Get something that supports lots of aphids then you'll get lots of hoverflies, lacewings, beetles, bugs! 
Birches and maples are particularly good for this. | I have no problem with green fly etc i'm an orgainic gardener myself. I was mainly thinking of the fruit and it's purposes-Quince Jelly, Wine or even just simply baked! Putting one in my garden wouldn't hurt would it?

| | | Re: What tree to plant I'd think of elderberry or even hawthorn. hawthorn isn't a hedge, left to grow naturally it is a tree and one that supports 149 species of insect as well as providing nesting sites and food for birds. The elderberry is also worth a though, especially if it's going to be in good sun. |

Hawthorn (Crataeugus Pauls Scarlet) maximum insects, double red flower.
