| | | Strawberry Identification Can anyone tell me if this is a Barren Strawberry (Potentilla sterilis) or a Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca)?
It does have tiny hairs under the leaves but the petals are hardly touching. I found it growing out of the cracks on my driveway.
Thanks,
Jenny |

They don't smell of garlic either.

I thought Barren Strawberry at first, but my book says that this does not have the little hairs under the leaf. Mine definitely has hairs under the leaves. Any thoughts?

| | | Re: Strawberry ID From Fitter, Fitter & Blamey: The Wild Flowers of Britain & Northern Europe (not IMO the best guide, but I don't have my Francis Rose to hand at the moment).
Barren Strawberry Potentilla sterilis Low hairy perennial, usually with runners and with spreading hairs on stem and leaves. Leaves smaller than [wild strawberry], blunt-toothed, and bluish; leaflets 5-25 mm toothed. Flowers 10-15 mm, white, with gaps between the slightly notched petals; Feb-May...Dry grassland and open woods.
The only other strawberry with separated petals is Hautbois Strawberry Fragaria moschata which is larger than Wild strawberry (leaflets more than 60mm), has flower stalks longer than the leaves, and confined to eastern Britain.
Does that help? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
